- In October 2000, BigYellow.com, BigBook.com, and SuperPages.com combined. Virizon presents this new SuperPages.com with over 13 million businesses nationwide, plus Canada. It can be searched by business category, name, city, and state.
- InfoSpace.com
- Infospace aggregates content from a number of sources. The result is a large and handy directory for people (including e-mail) and businesses. U.S. and Canadian business data provided by infoUSA; Thomson Directories for the UK; Kapitol for European countries. Data providers for residential are Acxiom (U.S. and Canada), 192.com (U.K.), and Kapitol (other European countries).
- AnyWho (AT&T) Directory
- Find telephone number, e-mail, FAX, toll-tree numbers in the U.S. The ability to search by street name, plus the toll-free and reverse look-up make this site especially valuable. An alternate toll-free search site can be found at the Lycos/WhoWhere Toll-Free Numbers.
- The Ultimates
- With so many search engines out there, it's really great to find a timesaver like The Ultimates. The site consolidates resources for searching white pages, yellow pages, email addresses, plus map and route planners. A wonderful feature of this service is copying your data across fields. No need to re-key your search terms! Search results are displayed in a new browser window.
- World Directories
- Global yellow pages. Fax, residential phone, and business numbers from various countries.
- Internet Country Codes
- A listing of countries and their codes for use on the Internet.
- Boardwatch Magazine's Directory of Internet Service Providers
- This is a very useful listing of Internet Service Providers worldwide. For the U.S., select the area code of your choice for detailed descriptions of service providers. Web and e-mail addresses are provided as well as detailed summaries of accounts available. If you are shopping around for a good Internet access price, this is the site to visit.
- Free Web-based Email Services
- Over 500 services listed, plus a good collection of e-mail directories, and listing for freebies in other categories, e.g., mailing list hosting.
- Computing Dictionary
- A very detailed dictionary of computer language with definitions of just about every computing term one could think of.
- High-Tech Dictionary
- This is a really excellent compilation of hundreds of computing terms. The definitions offered here tend to be a bit simpler than those in the Computing Dictionary above. Consequently, this is a friendlier starting point for the computer novice.

- This is a great computer terminology resource. Browse numerous categories such as memory, programming and operating systems, or conduct a search by phrase or keyword. - This is a fascinating example of a library putting the power of the Internet to great use. The Fact File is geared towards the retrieval of answers to tricky questions. Compiled by the staff of Hennepin County Library in Minnesota, it consists of facts drawn from various files maintained at libraries throughout the Hennepin County Library System. It is searchable by keyword or, you can browse an alphabetical index. This is a real gem of a Web page. Librarians, take a look!
- Price's List of Lists
- Compiled by librarian Gary Price at George Washington University. This is a collection of lists in the form of rankings. The best this and the top-ten that. A trove of highest, lowest, most, least, fastest growing, and so on. Price also has a fairly large collection of Almanacs/Factbooks/Handbooks & Related Reference Tools.
- New York Times - Books
- An absolute must for book lovers. Registration is required, but it's free. Search the archives of the New York Times Book Review back to 1980. Browse through back issues for the current year. Find information on current bestsellers. Read selected first chapters of books. Listen to authors talking at length about their lives and works at the index of audio specials, which is a real gem of a link (You will need to download real audio to access this part of the site). Finally, take the time to check out the New York Times itself. It is a marvelous site which is meticulously maintained and demonstrates the Web at it's best. - Publishers Weekly Bestseller Lists
- Locate the various PW bestseller lists here. Searching hardcover lists you can find detailed bestseller data for an author, title, or publisher. You can also search lists by date back to 1991. Check out our REader's ADvisor for other pointers to book information online.
- Amazon.com - Bookstore
- Search Amazon by author, title, subject, keyword, ISBN or advanced query to locate just about any book you can think of. However, this is more than just a bookstore. It includes hot titles in numerous different subject categories, articles and interviews and, much, much more.
- Publishing Organizations in North America
- This is a listing of publishers in the United States. It provides adresses, phone and fax numbers. Links to the publisher's Web site are provided where available.

- This "encyclopedic index" serves as a gateway to information available on the Internet. Search the MacroReference index for large areas of knowledge or the MicroReference index for more specific subjects.

- This excellent free encyclopedia allows you to search for fairly brief, but useful, general articles on a multitude of topics. The articles are hyperlinked to related subject areas. A great feature of this site is that you can forward your search to a number of search engines, and you can also look for related books at Barnes and Noble. Your query will automatically be forwarded to that site.
- Britannica.com
- Free online version. Subscription version available to Ohio public libraries inside a library or at home if you have a library card.
- Encarta On-line
- It is always a pleasure to find free and useful information. This abridged version of Microsoft's Encarta CD-ROM is a classic example of this kind of site. You can search article titles or full text, and you can select from different topic areas such as history, performing arts, geography, and so on. It is also possible to display articles which contain certain types of media such as maps, illustrations, tables and charts. Articles are hyperlinked to related topics. This is a terrific site for homework help and for all kinds of other information needs.
- Columbia Encyclopedia
- This is the 6th edition, year 2000 publication of the famous one-volume (print) encyclopedia. It contains over 50,000 article entries, browsable alphabetically or full-text searchable. A nice feature: it gives pronunciations of names.
- The Old Farmer's Almanac
- North America's oldest continuously published periodical is on the World Wide Web at this beautiful site. Find weather forecasts, heavenly details, sun & moon rise & set for your area, along with all the details which make the Farmer's Almanac a browser's delight.
- Pulitzer PrizeWinners
- Comprehensive information on the winners of the Pulitzer prize from 1995 to the present.
- The Nobel Foundation
- The official site of The Nobel Foundation. It includes detailed information about Nobel prize winners in all areas.
- Associations on the Net
- Get listings of associations under the headings of Arts, Business, Computers, Entertainment, Health, Industry, Labor, Law, Science and Social Sciences. From the Internet Public Library.
- Idealist
- At this site search 20,000 nonprofit and community organizations in 150 countries. It is searchable by keyword or geographic region.
- Guidestar Nonprofit Guide
- Guidestar describes itself as 'the donor's guide to the nonprofit universe.' It contains both financial and program information for over 650,000 charities and nonprofit organizations in the United States. You can search the database by keyword and by various fields such as city, state, andrevenue. Not all of the organizations have a full text report, but for financial information this is an excellent resource.

- This is a relatively small philosophy site which could be worth watching as it grows. At present it includes biographies of numerous philosophers, a timeline and a useful search function.

- This excellent philosophy resource, from Garth Kemerling, provides access to the study of traditional Western philosophy. - Bible Gateway
- Includes the Bible in other languages (German, Swedish, Latin, French, Spanish, Tagalog). It can be searched by passage, keyword (keyword gives a listing of references mentioning that word). It is also possible to search different versions of the Bible, e.g. King James, New World, etc.
- World Scripture: A Comparative Anthology of Sacred Texts
- This site includes the sacred scriptures and prayers of the five major living world religions; Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Chinese (Confucius and Taoism). There are no searching capabilities, just text. It includes an introduction, a purpose and a disclaimer and is arranged via broad general subject categories.
- The Catholic Encyclopedia
- The more than 11,000 entries in the original 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia (which is in the public domain). It is an authoritative source on religious and secular topics from the Catholic viewpoint, and matters relating to the history, teachings and activities of the Catholic Church from its beginnings.
- The Ecole Initiative
- Hypertext encyclopedia of early church history (to the Reformation).
- Religions, Faith Groups and Ethical Systems - ReligiousTolerance.org
- This is a worthy attempt to provide detailed descriptions of religions, faith groups and ethical systems. All the major world religions are covered, along with neo-pagan religious faiths, small non-christian religions, destructive cults, groups that define themselves as christian, and other ethical groups and spiritual paths. The authors of the site say that they have received much feedback, some positive and some negative. Take a look yourself and see what you think. One thing is certain. This is one of the most fascinating Web sites you will ever visit. This volunteer effort has funds to continue through 1999.
- Encyclopedia Mythica
- Mythology, mysticism and folklore from around the world can be found at this site. There are headings for Chinese, Etruscan, Greek, Japanese, Latvian, Mayan, Native American, Norse, Persian and Roman mythology. Other mythologies include Celtic, Egyptian, Hindu and Polynesian . Be aware that this source is a combination of articles contributed by the staff of Encyclopedia Mythica and general users of the Internet who are encouraged to submit materials. - Myths & Legends
- Not too many of the sites on our pages lead to lists of links, but this is one of those cases where the list is useful. Myths & Legends contains mythology and folklore from around the world. It includes the mythology of Korea, Japan, Hungary, Russia, Greece and Rome, Ireland, Britain, Australia and many other countries.
- Bulfinch's Mythology
- This is the hypertext version of one of the renowned mythology sources. Excellently maintained, it is searchable by word or phrase. Alternatively, you can go directly to the table of contents. Numerous links to other mythology resources are provided in the webmaster's notes and links areas of each volume.
- American Religion Data Archive (ARDA)
- The ARDA collection, funded by the Lilly Endowment, provides quantitative data on churches, church membership (including maps), religious professionals, and religious groups (individuals, congregations and denominations). Browse or search reports.

- The State Department publication. Another place to check is the Electronic Embassy. It provides directory information on each of the embassies in Washington D.C., with links to Web-based resources where available, at Foreign Embassies of Washington D.C.
- US Industrial Outlook
- This site provides an electronic text of the final (1994) edition of the paper US Industrial Outlook. Find here information on the status of major U.S. industries.
- Hoover's On-line
- Search Hoover's free Corporate Directory for current company/stock information. Also, check out "IPO Central," devoted to initial public offerings.
- The Fortune 500
- Here one can find detailed information on the Fortune 500. Company snapshots are provided, as well as links to company Web sites where available. There are various articles relating to the companies and a breakdown by industry. The site can be searched in several ways including by company, industry and by chief executive officer..
- Annual Report Gallery
- This is a library of company annual reports which are available on-line. It tends to deal with larger companies, and some of the reports can only be viewed using the adobe acrobat reader.
- Standard Industrial Classification Search
- This site comes from the United States Department of Labor. It allows the user to search the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification Manual by keyword or by SIC code number. It then supplies descriptive text from the SIC manual.
- Thomas Food Industry Register
- Register for free to access a database which gives you information on food manufacturers throughout the United States. Search by product, company, brand name. Now part of Grey House Publishing.
- Thomas Regional Industrial Directory
- You will need to register for this site, but it's free. ThomasRegional.com contains company information on over half a million middlemarket industrial distributors, manufacturers and service companies in 6,000 product and service categories. Searchable by product/service, company, brand name and location. Access contact information, online catalogs, fax forms and links to Web sites. Expanded online service includes Order Online e-commerce.
- CorpTech
- CorpTech profiles more than 50,000 public and private developers and producers of high-tech products in 17 industries, from biotech to pharmaceuticals to transportation. Visitors to the site can identify companies and get basic information. A free registration increases your access plus allows you to purchase in-depth reports and data capabilities. A nice aspect of the database is discrete entries for high-tech divisions of a company.
- Stock Market Places and Quotations
- We don't usually like to supply links to lists of sites. Here, however, we are prepared to make another exception. Market Places and Quotations provides links to stock exchanges, financial news centers and stock quote servers around the world. The U.S. is at the top of the list and it is followed by financial centers from Africa to Venezuela.
- The Insurance News Network
- In addition to insurance industry news, use the Insurance Company Guide for Standard & Poors reports on major national insurance companies.

- This publisher of business information and news about the insurance field, has made their Ratings Service
available online on their Web site. A one-time, no-cost registration is necessary to access the searchable database of companies. The Best rating and the insurer profile are free; a full company report may be obtained for a fee.- Universal Currency Converter
- Simply choose the currency you want converted, then choose the currency you want it converted into, and your answer will be provided.
- The Salary Calculator.
- This is a simple, but very useful, site. Type in your current salary and follow the instructions to find out how much you would need to earn if you plan to relocate to another city in the US, or a major city in another part of the world.
- The Mortgage Calculator
- Fill in the different fields for principal loan balance, annual interest rate, length of mortgage and pre-payment method. Then calculate your mortgage. Lots of fun until you see the result....
- USA Today Calculators
- Take a deep breath and dive into this site to find out how much money you need in your life. Here you will find calculators for consumer loans, college tuition, new cars, mortgages and retirement. There is also a currency convertor if you think that you can still afford a trip after looking at the other calculators!
- Campbell R. Harvey's Hypertextual Finance Glossary
- Brief descriptions of over 7200 financial terms from a Duke University professor.
- Banks of the World
- Connect to the Web sites of banks around the world in this simple bank directory. Another choice for U.S. banks is MyBank Directory; for worldwide, Banking on the Web, with indication of online banking.
- Investor Words
- A financial glossary with over 5,000 definitions and 15,000 links between related words.
- Bank Rate Monitor
- Bank Rate Monitor is a leading source for tracking rates for mortgages, credit cards, auto loans, savings, checking accounts, home equity loans and ATMs. It is updated every weekday and is a great source for timely financial information.
- Domania
- Search the database of home sales prices for a particular property or neighborhood from 1987 to present. Try HomeGain as another source for sales reports. Searching this property record database requires a free registration. Reports include additional data about the property's size and year built.
- O-Net (source for occupational information)
- This is one of those sites on our list which is a lot more than a simple ready reference page. O-Net comes from the US Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration. It replaces the Dictionary of Occupational Titles as the standard guide to career specific information. Basically, it is an extensive database for information on employment and worker characteristics. At the time of writing it is very much a work in progress, but it is certainly a site worth watching.
- Occupational Outlook Handbook
- Search alphabetically by job description or by broader occupational area for profiles of over 300 occupations. The profiles include nature of work, training needed, earnings, outlook, and more.
- Supreme Court Decisions
- This site provides credits, conditions, context, structure of Supreme Court Decisions and selected historic decisions. It can be searched by topic and keyword.
- Decisions of US Courts of Appeal on the Net
- Includes a nice explanation of the U.S. Court System. Also included is a way cool map of the U.S.A. showing each circuit court. Hyperlinks enable you to click on the map and get local decisions by year.
- Ohio Supreme Court
- Includes opinions searchable by case number, date, keyword in caption or headnotes. There is a separate section of current case summaries.
- Eighth Appellate District Court of Appeals
- The Cuyahoga county appellate district. Includes a gopher menu of court opinions from 1990-present
- The Federal Court Locator
- Access to the various Courts of Appeals and District Courts.
- U.S.Government Manual
- Hyperlinks take you to any branch or government office for a listing of people and their titles. There is no searchable index per se, but there is a subject index to the agencies.
- Full-text state statutes and legislation on the Internet
- Quite simply, this page provides links to full text state constitutions, statutes, legislation and session laws (i.e. laws as they appear before codification). Please note that the page seeks to avoid links to federal information, court decisions, summaries of laws or bills, single-topic sites (such as a state's computer laws), incomplete documents and sites that charge fees for access.
- CapWeb
- CapWeb is an excellent guide to the U.S. Congress. Here you can locate information on all branches of the United States Government. A handy feature is the zip code lookup for contact information for State Representatives and Senators.
- Contacting the Congress
- This very up to date resource supplies phone and fax numbers for members of Congress as well as e-mail addresses if available. More than this it provides links to the Web sites of individual Congress members. It is searchable by geographic location, by name and by zip code.
- Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
- From 1774 to the present. Presents a biographical sketch and directs you to further reading and the locations of research materials.
- US Government Printing Office - GPO Access
- Search one or more of a variety of government publications dating from the mid-1990's on. Publications provided include Congressional Record, Congressional Bills, Public Laws, U.S. Code, Federal Register, and more.
- United States Copyright Office
- Find out about copyright basics and registration; access forms for printing and link to other Internet resources related to copyright.
- United States Patent and Trademark Office
- Find basic facts about patents and trademarks; search the U.S. Patent database (1976-current) and the Web Trademark Database (Trademarks Registered and Trademarks Pending, updated on a 2-month cycle); view U.S. and international legal materials and access links to other patent and trademark related Web sites.
- IPN Delphion Intellectual Property Network
- This site serves as a good companion to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It allows the user access to text and images of U.S. patents to 1974, text and some images to 1971, plus an extensive international collection as well. Search by using keywords, patent number, boolean logic and multiple field. You can also browse through a classified listing.
- Social Security On-line
- The history of the agency, benefits forms, the Social Security Handbook and much more. This is an invaluable resource for Social Security information.
- Ancestry's Social Security Death Index
- Look up a name and find the death date, death state and social security number. Covers social security number bearers back to approximately 1962. A form for limiting your search is available, as are tips for further genealogical research using this information.
- Where to Write for Vital Records
- This site provides information from the National Center for Health Statistics. It lists the addresses of individual state databases of vital records where one can find the information needed to request a birth, death, marriage or divorce certificate. Other links provide access to information on foreign births and deaths of U.S. citizens, as well as certificates of citizenship for U.S. citizens.
- US GSA's Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance Programs
- This site contains information on Federal programs, projects, services, and activities which provide financial and non financial assistance to the general public. Search by keyword.
- Fedworld Information Network
- A bold attempt by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) to make all sorts of government resources and information accessible from one site. Check out the link called Federal Job Announcement Search. It provides listings to hundreds of U.S. Government jobs and is updated several times every week.
- First Gov
- U.S. government portal launched during the Clinton administration. Scans 27 million federal agency Web pages from 20,000 government sites. In addition to keyword searching there is an "interesting topics" list and direct links to the 3 branches of government.
- Official Federal Government Web Sites - Executive - Legislative - Judicial
- One of those listings we generally try to avoid. However, this one is so useful and easy to use that it finds it's way onto our page. This is a comprehensive listing of federal government Web resources compiled by the Library of Congress. The executive lists Executive office, Executive branch and independent agencies; the judicial includes Judicial Branch and non-government sites with legal information.
- U.S. Blue Pages
- This site is modeled after the blue government pages in a telephone book. Find telephone and TTY numbers and links to Web sites for federal agencies grouped by function rather than name. A good place to find the locations and numbers of local offices.
- Legal and Government Pathfinder
- Bringing it all closer to home is this Lakewood Library resource guide, designed for library patrons and others seeking information on legal and government issues. Includes some of the better books on law and government in the library's collection, important Web sites containing legal and government information, as well as a referral section with links to institutions with more extensive legal resources.
- Internal Revenue Service
- Lists forms and publications which can then be printed. You will also find tax information for businesses, as well as tax regulations and instructions for on-line filing.
- American Payroll Association Tool Kit
- Good stuff for businesses including W-4 forms, withholding tables, current mileage and per diem rate charts.
- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
- Everything you might ever need to know about traffic safety in the United States can be found here. This great site will provide you with solid data about everything from airbags and recalls to school bus safety and traffic law enforcement. Take the time to scout around in this detailed resource if you have a traffic safety question - your answer is probably here.
- License Plates of the World
- Not too much need for explanation here. Click above for good quality pictures of license plates from all over the world. There are also brief summaries of how different license plates are formulated. These deal with both current and previous series. This site is a nicely organized labor of love from a true enthusiast.
- Martindale.com Lawyer Locator
- Locate lawyers and law firms in the U.S. and around the world. Search by lawyer or firm name and by area of practice, location or language. It is also possible to look for U.S. government lawyers in Washington D.C. and to locate corporate law departments.
- FindLaw Law Firm and Lawyer Directory (West Legal Directory)
- Lists individual lawyers addresses and phone numbers. Also search by city and state, which lists lawyers, law firms and other county offices.
- FindLaw
- FindLaw works in the manner of a hierarchical subject directory for its vast amounts of legal information. You can search or browse, where distinction is made as to legal professional, student, business or public. Search results are ordered into Q&A, articles, links. A good gateway. - WWLIA
- The aim of the World Wide Legal Information Association is to provide a good basis of legal advice for the average, lay citizen. To that end, and in plain English, is information on legal topics in Canada, the Pacific, the UK and the U.S. Very useful is the Law Dictionary. Also, take a look at the Police Station for practical advice about such things as annoying phone calls and personal safety.
- The Law Engine
- The Law Engine is a clearinghouse for legal information. There are numerous links from one page to topics such as federal courts, state law, legal reference, international law, legal dictionaries, legislative action and law enforcement.
- American Law Sources On-line
- This is another fabulous law resource. While it is certainly contains a daunting amount of information, it may well become your one stop for legal information on the Internet. Navigation here is straightforward and the site itself deals with federal and state law. You can go directly to Federal Government resources under the headings of law, commentary and practice or to individual states. There is also detailed legal information for Canada and Mexico. If you are involved in legal research this is probably the one site you have to visit!
- Legal Encyclopedia from Nolo Press
- Here is another legal page which is really worth a visit. The LegalEncyclopedia is clearly presented in a manageable directory style. It includes excellent articles on everything from starting a small business and dealing with tax problems to patent law and general legal issues. Best of all, it avoids legal jargon and is clearly written with the ordinary member of the public in mind.

- Serches approximately 29,000 schools that participated in the National Center for Education Statistics' biennial survey.
- American School Directory
- The American School Directory provides basic information about all K-12 schools in the U.S. This includes contact information, address and such facts as number of students, school colors and so on. Many of the schools are full of other sorts of information, such as calendars, menus, art and more. This is very much a work in progress and is worth revisiting from time to time.
- U.S. Census Bureau
- This site has frequently updated census statistics, including The County & City Data Book. Links to other sites lead to more information. An economic clock gives the latest business indicators.
- Statistical Abstract of the United States
- Excerpts from a standard reference source. It includes regularly updated statistics and many frequently requested tables such as ones on crime, population etc. There are also monthly updates on economic indicators and links to other government sources.

- This is one of the standard ready reference sources, so it is a pleasure to see it on-line. Search for hundreds of quick reference answers in the areas of world, sports, entertainment, the U.S., people, business and economy, living, society,and science-technology. At the ready reference level you won't find a more useful site.
- Fedstats
- This is not an easy site to summarize due to the amount of information it provides. Fedstats is maintained by The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy. It contains statistical data from more than 70 U.S. agencies. You can browse the entire contents of the site from A-Z or conduct a keyword search for a specific topic.
- United States Postal Service
- Among the many services, look for the 9-digit zip code look-up and the domestic rate calculator. The Service Guide link provides the Postal Explorer, a library of information for business mailers.

- Enter a city, county, or telephone area code and get all possible zip codes. Enter a zip or partial zip to get the locations contained.

- USDA Nutrient Database
- Enter a keyword and see your favorite food items broken down into their various minerals, vitamins, amino acids and so on. If you need to know what a particular food is composed of, this should be your first stop on the Web. Another great USDA site is Nutrition.gov with its Interactive Healthy Eating Index. Enter your daily food intake and get an assessment.

- Better Homes and Gardens Home Improvement Encyclopedia
- This site has the kind of quality one would expect from Better Homes and Gardens. There are general headings for Home Improvement Basics, House Structure, Decks, Plumbing, Electrical and Phone, Yard Structures and Landscape. There is also a Tool Dictionary and a link to Project Calculators (under construction at the time of writing). Under each heading you will find other links explaining the intricacies of everything from improving your lighting to ordering lumber. Some of the screens utilize the Shockwave Plug-in but it is not an essential feature for users of the site.
- HouseNet
- HouseNet is not quite as accomplished a site as Better Homes and Gardens above. This is due, in large part, to it's reliance on text as opposed to the text and graphics which makes Better Homes and Gardens so successful. However, there are numerous how-to articles, a nice series of Do it Together Projects, a handy cost of a job link and the useful paint calculator.

- HomeCare2 is a small, but useful site. Using pull down menus you can select from various headings such as home furnishings and exterior topics. You can then narrow your search to select specific categories within the main headings, and display simple solutions to common household problems. There is more to this site than meets the eye, so it is certainly worth investigating.

- This incredibly useful gem provides simple and effective tutorials for many of life's little problems. If you want to learn how to iron a shirt correctly, how to burp a baby, or to pick an amusing, unpretentious little wine, this site will give you step-by-step directions. General categories include: automotive, careers, computers, home electronics, finance, food & entertaining, hobbies & games, home & garden, personal care, pets, sports & fitness, travel. A quirky and clever piece of work. Registration is necessary, but free. Also try: SoYouWanna and Weeno (where you can share your expertise).
- How Stuff Works
- Here is a really useful site. The 'stuff' referred to is articles on engines and motors, electronics, basic technologies, computers and the Internet, and much more. The articles are clearly and concisely written and copiously illustrated. This is a really excellent site. It is extremely attracive and is easy to navigate. Be sure to check it out.

- The official site of the famous medical journal. No full text articles unfortunately, but it does supply detailed abstracts of most articles. You can search by title, topic or author from 1990 to the present.
- AMA Physician Select
- This site is compiled and published by the American Medical Association. It is a searchable database containing information on over 650,000 doctors of medicine and doctors of osteopathy or osteopathic medicine. Contact information is provided as well as gender, medical schooling and year of graduation, residency training, primary medical specialty and secondary practice specialty. You will also find the type of practice the physician concerned operates from, whether he/she has the American Medical Association Recognition Award and whether he/she is board certified.
- The Merck Manual of Medical Information - Home Edition
- The authoritative medical reference geared down for the lay reader. There is a comprehensive contents page and term searching.
- Complete Home Medical Guide
- Here is a favorite medical site, the 3rd revised edition from The Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. There are over 30 chapters here, ranging from the basics of the health industry and getting the care you need, to diseases and mental health. There are numerous topics devoted to both men and women and to young and old. Great stuff, with the added bonus that it is attractively laid out and is easy to use.
- MedlinePlus
- Start here. This is the consumer-oriented source of information on medicine, health, drugs, and wellness launched by the National Library of Medicine. Where Medline is search-only and bibliographic, MedlinePlus is search or browse and full-text. MedlinePlus contains publications from government agencies and other medical authorities, the Health Illustrated Encyclopedia (adam.com) and the drug manual Advice for the Patient (U.S. Pharmacopeia). It also provides a slick segue to Medline for further research using predefined searches. For advanced research (11 million article references published in more than 4300 journals), use PubMed, the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE search engine or Grateful Med.

- This is another U.S. government site which provides access to health information from U.S. government agencies and other organizations which partner with government agencies to provide information to the public. Overall, it lacks the depth of MedlinePlus but its strength is its links to support and research organizations.
- Accredited Medical Schools of the U.S. and Canada
- This is an alphabetical listing, by state or province, of accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada. It provides links to the Web sites of the various medical schools and is, thus, most useful as a general guide rather than as an objective assessment area. Addresses are provided for those who require application materials for any of the schools mentioned.
- The Internet Drug Index
- The Drug index is searchable by brand name and generic name. The overview of each drug includes description, actions/clinical pharmacology, indications and usage, contraindications, warnings, precautions, drug interactions, adverse reactions, over dosage, dosage and administration.

- A Modern Herbal
- This charming site is a hypertext version of the book A Modern Herbal which was written in 1931 by Mrs. M. Grieve. It discusses nearly 800 varieties of medicinal, culinary and cosmetic herbs in detail. A common name index can be accessed, or one can do a word search for a particular herb. There are also indexes of recipes and poisons. Read the Editor's intro link for an interesting introduction to this fascinating site. Another site that covers 500 herbs for medicinal use is An Illustrated Herbal, based largely on Nicholas Culpeper's Herbal. Hint: the main arrangement is alphabetical; to search by by keyword use the triangle-with-eye icon at the bottom.

- The Dead People Server
- This is a listing of celebrities, politicians and other famous dead people. Actually, being dead is not a prerequisite for inclusion on this site, but those who are dead have the date and cause of death listed. An interesting and useful site whose grim subject matter is often given a light hearted twist.

- There are so many excellent music sites on the Web that it is difficult to know where to start searching. The Ultimate Band List is certainly a good first choice. It is a compilation of thousands of different Web sites devoted to just about any band one can think of. Use the alphabetical menu bar for easy browsing. Be aware that, scattered amongst the official band sites, there are many personal homepages.
- The All-Music Guide
- This is an interesting and diverse collection of musical information. Search by album title, artist name or song title. Album listings often give a brief summary of the material along with release dates, label information and listings of personnel involved. Search by person's name for fairly detailed biographies as well as handy links to similar artists. This brief summary fails to do justice to an eclectic and worthwhile site.
- The International Lyrics Server
- Since 1997 the International Lyrics Server has weathered legal difficulties--confiscated data and cease and desist orders. At one time, Pascal de Vries' Swiss site contained lyrics to 100,000 songs. The Lyrics Server now is partnered with SongFile and supplies lyrics to more than 62,000 songs (all legally) from a database of over 130,000. Other sites to watch: The LyricsH, with over 37,000 lyrics; Lyrics.com; Lyrics World, with top forty songs from 1930-1999; Digital Traditions Folksong Database, 6500 folk songs, mostly public domain; Deutsche Volkslieder, German folk songs plus blues, gospel, and world folk. - The Literary Calendar

- This Washington Post service is a gold mine for information on countries around the world. Here one can find recent articles on individual countries from the Washington Post itself and from the Associated Press. - For a quick overview of a particular country Atlapedia is a good site to visit. Summaries are provided for location and geography, climate, people, religion, languages and modern history. There is also brief information provided for such areas as major industries, area and population.

- If you have looked at any of the links above you will know that there is a lot of wonderful information about the countries of the world available on the Internet. Country Studies is another fabulous resource. It includes data on the history, society, people, education, religion, economy and government of the countries listed. Great for school reports or for more detailed study. This site is highly recommended.
- Travel Warnings & Consular Information Sheets
- This site could literally be a real life saver! Travel warnings are issued by the State Department when it is recommended that travel to particular countries is to be avoided. Information sheets include all sorts of useful hints for the potential traveler. You might want to take a trip to this site before you take a trip to your travel agent!
- Chiefs of State and Cabinet Members of Foreign Governments
- Given the rapid changes in government personnel in countries all over the world, this site does a good job of keeping reasonably well up-to-date.
