Course: Health and Physical Education P-15 (9th Grade)

Department: Health and Physical Education

Credit: 0.5 After Successfully Completing the Course

 

Course Description:

            The Physical Education component provides a multi-faceted program of selected Physical Education activities.  These activities facilitate the development of skills in the areas of dance, individual sports, team sports, lifetime sports, and overall fitness.  Application of theory of game play and officiating will be related to selected sports. 

Content Standards:

            Students shall demonstrate competence in the knowledge of and experience in the development of performance skills in a variety of physical activities.

 

            Students shall demonstrate competence in the knowledge of, and experience in, motor development and the function of the body in exercise movement.

 

            Students will engage in activities using inter-personal communication skills that respect differences among people and demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior. 

 

Course Outline:

            The students will participate in one advisory of indoor activities and one advisory of outdoor activities.

 

Students will complete the following objectives for each sport covered in the Physical Education component:

  1. Give historical background
  2. State the rules of the game or activity
  3. Describe game play
  4. State the meaning of terms
  5. Describe violations and fouls
  6. Demonstrate basics skills

 

The Physical Education activity segment may be chosen from the following sports:

  1. Touch football
  2. Soccer
  3. Basketball
  4. Badminton
  5. Tennis
  6. Volleyball
  7. Softball
  8. Dance
  9. Aerobics
  10. Weight Training
  11. Frisbee

 

Materials:

  1. Woodrow Wilson Senior High Physical Education uniform (Wilson Tiger shorts and Wilson Tiger tee-shirt)
  2. Tennis shoes and white socks
  3. Notebook
  4. Pad lock
  5. Towel

 

Course Requirements:

            Attendance and participation is required.  Any absence must be supported by a note from home.  Three unexcused absences in a double-period class or five unexcused absences in a single-period class within an advisory may result in failure.

 

            Medical statements are to be submitted on the first day of class if a student is to be exempt from a Physical Education component.  As part of your personal hygiene, it is mandatory that all students take a shower.

 

Grading:

  1. Participation, Preparation, and Skills- 60%
  2. Written Test(s)- 20%
  3. Special Projects/Reports/Notebook- 20%
